Welcome

When a new student walks through the door of one of my yoga classes or into a private session, I see it as an opportunity to share with them a gift that has (and continues to) shape me in body and spirit.

If you're new to yoga, I encourage you to give the practice some time. I did not fall in love with yoga the first time I stepped on a mat (I was actually quite certain this practice would not work for me!). But I stepped on the mat because I was in a desperate season with chronic pain and willing to try anything for my body. Amazingly, my spirit was also changed. Now I cannot imagine my life without this practice! Yoga is more than exercise, it is a spiritual discipline. If you embrace it as such, more than your physical body can indeed be changed!

I hope that the tips and information below and the resources on this site help begin to answer some of your questions about the practice of yoga as you begin (or grow!) your yoga journey. Visit the FAQ page for answers to other questions. Have a question not answered on this site? Contact me and I'll respond as soon as possible. It is an honor to share this practice and be with you on this journey.

Grace and Peace,
Whitney

Tips

  • Slip off your shoes and socks (we practice in bare feet and socks are a slippery hazard), tuck away your belongings, and please turn your phone to silent as you enter in to your practice! The world will wait for an hour as you allow both your body and your mind to fully engage in the practice of yoga.
  • If you have your own personal mat, bring it to class. Extra mats and props are provided at the studios/gyms where I teach. Hygienically, I recommend each student purchase their own mat (let me know if you need suggestions).
  • Please plan to stay for the entire class. We begin and end with a time of meditation - these are an important part of the practice!
  • Practicing on an empty stomach or after a light snack is preferable (skip the caffeine too).
  • Be kind to yourself and drop the comparison to others or magazine covers. Yoga is not a competitive sport. It is a personal practice and we are each at a different point on our yoga journey. Love yourself, love your journey!
  • If you have medical concerns, please let me know directly. Some modifications may be necessary for your body and your practice. Pain is a warning sign, so let me know if you experience pain in your practice!

Practice

  • Your practice of yoga grows as you incorporate the tools of yoga for more than simply the hours you show up on your mat in class. Incorporate basic yoga breathing techniques and stretching into your daily life: in the kitchen, before or after your workout sessions, when you wake up or before bed, etc.
  • Consider beginning (or recommitting to) a meditation or daily prayer practice (see the blog for many great ways to pray).
  • Browse the online resources I have linked for beginning a home yoga practice or schedule a private session in your own home and I will help you design and create your very own space (your own space can be simple and cost effective).
